What’s needed to become employed in this rewarding industry?
Some amount of post-secondary education is helpful, but in the P-H-C
field, on-the-job training is as important as education. The entry
level position in this field is apprenticeship. In South Dakota, apprentices
are licensed and they work under the supervision of journeymen on
commercial and residential plumbing and heating. An apprenticeship
consists of 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, plus an approved curriculum
program offered by SDAPHCC. The SDAPHCC offers curriculums for both
plumbing and HVAC apprenticeships. Once an apprentice has completed
the on-the-job training, they’re allowed to take the journeyman’s
test.
